Idea Name:
Pencil Pusher

Overview:
Small desk-top rover with solar power

Concepts/Skills:
Solar engine, or perhaps battery with solar recharge. Some obstacle avoidance in case I leave a book on my desk or hiney avoidance if someone sits on my desk. Desk edge detection to avoid crash 'n' burn. And finally, relatively small body.

Description:
This is a basic guy who just drives around my desk. I've got a 4'x2' part of my desk that's clear of just about everything besides a small American Flag and a little Fang-Schway-rock-garden-waterfall-thingie. The desk has a built-in lamp so I want to make a guy who's solar powered, or battery powered with solar recharge. He'll need to be able to detect objects like Fang-Shooie thing or random reference books I leave out or people's behinds when they sit on my desk. And most importantly, he'll need to be able to detect the edge of the desk so he doesnt plummet to firey death. And since he's a desk topper he should be small. It'll give me a chance to really try to cram into a small space. I have a prescription medicine-capsule bottle (90-day supply sized) which I think would make a good body for Pencil Pusher. If I go with battery-power, he should be able to detect low battery conditions and then switch to photo-vore for most efficient recharge. Could be an opportunity to try out an Atmel ATmini microcontroller.
